When you pass urine when you don’t intend to this is known as urinary incontinence. It is quite common, as there are thought to be some three million sufferers in the United Kingdom. It is more common in older people and one in five women over the age of 40 have the condition.
There are two main types – stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak to prevent urination and urge incontinence occurs when incorrect signals are sent between the brain and the bladder. Some people have a combination of the two.
Other treatments include exercise and electrical therapy.
