What are the signs and symptoms of STIs and STDs?
A Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) is transmitted during sexual contact and can also be referred to as a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). They are common and bacteria, viruses or parasites can cause them. Anyone that is sexually active can catch a STI if they do not practise safe sex. There are many STIs that can strike, some of which are chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, crabs, hepatitis, scabies and even HIV.
So what are the signs, symptoms and treatments of STIs?
Signs and symptoms
- Unusual discharge from vagina, anus or penis
- Pain during urination
- Pain in the testicles or scrotum
- Bumps and lumps on the genitals
- Blisters, ulcers, warts, rashes and sores in the genital area
- Itching in the genital area
- Pain during secual intercourse
- Lower abdominal pain
- Swelling or pain of the glands in the groin area
There is only one way to find out if you have an STI and that is to have a sexual health check-up. These are normally easy to do and normally involve a urine sample, blood test or fluid sample.
Once it is diagnosed what the STI is, the treatment can be quite simple. However, treatment differs depending on the infection:
- Bacterial Infection
For infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, mycoplasma genitalium and syphilis, antibiotics is the best treatment
STIs such as pubic lice and scabies would have medicated shampoos as the best treatment
- Viral Infection
Infections such as genital herpes, HIV, hepatitis B and HIV do not have a cure but treatments can be given to control the growth of the virus and to prevent symptoms.
